Doves and Pigeons offer excellent sport shooting but have not gained the popularity of the other groups
Ducks and geese:
“Flighting” from hides is the most common technique for hunting Ducks and geese, the hunter waits for the birds to fly away from the resting grounds and or for their return.
Example species of this group include : Yellow-billed duck, Cape teal, Hottentot teal, white faced duck, knob billed duck and Egyptian and spur wing geese.
Guinea fowl:
This group is the most common and wide spread with the helmeted guinea fowl being most common. This group is best hunted with beaters or dogs.
Driving with beaters – driving the birds towards the guns. Experienced beaters proof more successful the inexperienced beaters.
Francolin:
Species such as Redwing - , Swainson’s, coqui, Natal, Crested and red necked Francolins represent excellent sport shooting.
Virtually all shooting is done by “walking up” with one or more guns.
These birds are particularly good hunting when pointers is used as they sit close.
Sand grouse:
This species is well known for there late after noon drinking sessions as they come to water holes in masses to drink water. This behavior suits “flighting” one of the best hunting techniques. |
