Even - toed ungulates is ungulates that have a even number of toes, and vary from the small duiker to the large Hippo. These animals belong to the order Artiodactyla. Most of African herbivorous species belong to this order. This includes Hippopotamus, pigs, Giraffe and all the antelope including buffalo.
Even toed - ungulates vary greatly in size behaviour and feeding habits.
Due to the large diversity of this order even toes ungulates have become specialists in almost all the different habitats of the African continent.
Developing extraordinary survival strategies.
These strategies include very selective feeding behaviour, predator evasion techniques, camouflage, speed and stamina. These aspects is present in all ungulates but each species has adapted their strategies to suit their characteristics best.
Ungulates on the open plains tend to move in herds and are able to cover long distances very fast on a very energy efficient way. Ungulates that occur in forest areas are more cryptic and tend to be masters of camouflage.
