African Carnivore and Predators

African Predators Carnivores- order: Carnivora :

Africa is a unique continent fortunate to have a variety of carnivores which include big cats, small cats, Wild dogs, hyena, aardwolf, civets genets, mongooses to name a few.

These predators is experts in the population control of african antelope population numbers. Species such as Lion, Hyena and leopard have become specialists in hunting certain animal species in certain demographical areas.

Certain lion prides in the kruger national park of south africa have become buffalo hunting specialists, where other prides tend to avoid buffalo.

In certain areas in botswana lion prides have become specialist in hunting elephant.

This is only few examples of the diversity predators have developed to survive in there given circumstances.

Aardwolf (Protelidae)

The aardwolf occurs in all habitats except true desert and forests, feeding exclusively on harvester termites.

Aardwolf is normally nocturnal in summer and starts feeding in the late afternoon depending on the activity of the harvester termites.

 

Hyaenas (Hyaenidae)

Mainly 2 species occur in Southern Africa the Brown Hyena and the Spotted hyenas. Hyenas are mostly scavengers and are known to omnivorous eating what they can scavenge.

Hyenas have very heavy heads with very strong jaws, perfectly adapted for cracking and eating strong bones.
Hyenas are well known for there extreme biting power

Cats (Felidae) including Lion and leopard

this is by far the most well known family of all the predators, specially the larger species such as the African Lion and the leopard. These big cats are very different as lions are pride animals and leopards are more solitary and elusive.
Lions tend to prey on larger animals that require team work to make a kill, and leopard prey on smaller animals such as impala that can be ambushed easily.

Wilddog,Jackal and Foxes (Canidae)
Wild dog, Jackal and foxes are not very popular with any type of farmer as almost no fence can keep them in and they can cause a lot of damage
Polecat, Ratel (Mustelidae)
This amazing animal is well known for its ability to survive under harsh circumstances and is immune to certain poisonous snake bites such as puff adder.
Civets, Genets and mongooses (Viverridae)
