Rhinoceros In South Africa
The Big Five

There is two species of rhino located in South Africa namely the Black rhino or the hooked lipped rhinoceros (Diceros bicornus) and the white rhino or the square lipped Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum)

The white rhino is more placed then the black rhino but is responsible for more deaths due to people venturing to close to the animals. They are also larger and much heavier. White rhino is grazers and there calves walk in front of the mother

The black rhino is very aggressive and smaller, they are actually nocturnal explaining there grumpy behaviour during the day. The black rhino is a browser and they prefer staying in thickets instead of the open grass plains like the white rhino.

Both these species have been endangered by poaching as rhino horn is very sort after commodity in the far east. These animals were almost poached to extinction.
Ironically enough when these animals could be hunted with the correct permits these animals value sky rocketed and they are now bred to numbers exceeding all expectations

Best Rhino Hunting Caliber

Due to the quantity of body mass and large bone structure of Rhinoceroses.
It is best to use large hunting calibers with heavy grain solid projectiles(bullets) with low velocity and high momentum.

The best caliber would be no smaller than .375 with heavy grain bullet.
Other calibers that are also very efficient in hunting African Rhino's include .416 Rigby, .458, 500 nitro express.

It is also advised to use a bolt action rifle as you can fire 3 rounds faster with a bolt action then 3 rounds with a double barrel rifle.

Rhino a management tool
Rhino can be one of the best management tool a Game ranch or reserve can have if managed correctly. Both african rhino species have very important roles to play in conservation and veld management.
The white rhino can be used as a very effective mass grazer that keeps the dry biomass in the veld to a minimum and so preventing fires burning to hot. This would decrease the fire frequency and intensity allowing vegetation to be establish and not be destroyed by constant burning.

The black rhino can be a effective tool in opening up path ways thru bush encroached areas making more browsing available ungulate species
